Well, there is a few ways to do this & it all depends on what its for.
We suggest using method A) for a quick measurement when sizing your garden to find your appropriate package size, method B) is an accurate way to measure a town garden & method C) is appropriate for larger complex gardens.

A) Measuring for your Garden Package - fastest, cheapest & easiest method
Head to www.mapdevelopers.com online tool following the link to measure your garden.
Enter your address.
Switch to satalite view using the button on the top left.
Zoom to your garden using 'Ctrl+Scroll'.
Select the 'Draw New Area' tool & plot your garden boundary or space you'd like to renovate.
Check the top left to see your gardens measurment in meters².

B) Self designing your garden - accurate but slow method - Recommended for self design
You'll need a some paper, pencil, tape, we recommend a 30m tape on a reel, which you can pick up for approximately £10-£20 at your local builders or tool merchants. It helps to have line marking paint & a friend for this process.
Sketch a rough boundary of your garden. (This doesn't have to look good!)
Measure & record your boundary on your sketch. (Include any structures e.g House, Garage, Shed)
Identify & record any permanent obstacles e.g drains, trees, walls & doors. If it is essential to locate these with precision you can use triangulation to record these obstacles. You will need x2 unmovable reference points. Often fence posts or house corners are used. (Ensure your reference points have been recorded on your sketch) Measure from both your reference points to your obstacle recording each. Top Tip: Ask a friend for help when using triangulation! This can be very fiddly!
Finalise your site measurements. Finally you have your measurements, its time to record these in a tidy manor. Sites such as www.gardena.com are a great way free method to accurately input your dimensions & design your garden or print off your dimensions and sketch on to.
Check out our design guides to ensure you consider and plan correctly to make the most of your space, create beautiful visuals and practical purpose within your garden.

C) Larger and/or complex Bespoke Gardens - precision, hassle free but expensive method
Hire a surveyor! You may already have one of these, check with your architect & request the .DWG if you already have a survey. The price can range from £250-£1000+ dependent on the site and details required. Your survey can be relayed directly onto CAD software with pin point accuracy ready for your designer/architect (Yes thats right architects can use this survey too when completing future works to your property) and will include gradients to ensure your designer makes the appropriate precautions for your new garden. This can save money & time in the bigger picture!
